When tragic events occur we search for answers and solace. When one human being murders another it is a vicious ugly act, more so, when the victim is young and innocent. Brutality is not beyond the human condition. There is no limit to mans actions when he is wrought with anger, envy, and contempt for another. The state of rage can produce catastrophic results.
We seek justice vehemently when someone is murdered senselessly, we will not rest until the murderer is found and brought to justice. We learn in our story that the victim, murdered one, is also seeking justice. While we conduct criminal investigations, inquests, and trials, there exists another element, a power emanating directly from the murdered victim, who will not rest, until the criminal is brought to justice.
Our story is based on a true unsolved murder, which occurred in 1948 in Oregon, Illinois. A young, vibrant, MARY JANE REED was brutally murdered as she and her boyfriend were parked on lover's lane.
MARY JANE was vibrant, alive, flirtatious, and sensual. Her love of life and free spirit so outraged the stoic Midwest rural mentality of the town's purists, and ignited the passions of the men of Oregon.
The price she paid for her radiant presence was to be killed. Ignorance and hypocrisy may have killed her body in 1948, yet, beginning the summer of 1998, her spirit and visual presence appears and communicates in detail to the former Mayor of Oregon, as well as two of his employees, and a few customers on a regular basis in a popular old restaurant/tavern that in its haydays of the 1940's was called the "Stenhouse."
The message we whisper to our audience is that justice comes from those who have been unjustly murdered. That the murderer may be able to cover up his crime among the living, but never into eternity be able to escape the wrath of his victims.
